A Renewed Crosses Festival Fills Cordoba's Streets |
||
Cordoba Info |
Cordoba's May festivals got off to a splendid start this year with the Crosses Festival, the month's first major event. Coinciding with Labor Day on May 1st, a 4-day weekend in much of Spain, and balmy weather, the neighborhood crosses attracted thousands of locals as well as tourists from other parts of Spain. In response to criticism in recent years, the City Hall established new guidelines regarding the type of music which can be played and took action to prevent unauthorized street parties by youths in the proximity of the crosses. The measures appear to have returned the traditional charm to this popular festival. Two of this year's winning crosses were in or next to the emblematic Capuchinos Square in the city's large historic district. The Plaza de Capuchinos cross and it's bar-restaurant was run by the Hermandad de los Dolores brotherhood, while the Cuesta del Balío Cross was set up by la Hermandad de la Paz. Both associations use proceeds to maintain their artistic heritage and finance activities such as their Holy Week processions. A third winning cross was in the Cañero neighborhood, sponsored by the Cañero Neighborhood Association. 4 May 2008 |
